However, many women also experience abnormal hair loss at younger ages due to factors like hormonal imbalances, stress, nutritional deficiencies, inflammatory conditions, and more.

In this post, I’ll explore the different causes of hair loss in women as well as natural strategies and remedies that can help minimize shedding and restore healthy hair growth.

Causes of Hair Loss in Women

There are numerous potential causes that can trigger excessive hair shedding or thinning hair in women, including:

Hormonal Imbalances
Hormones like estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHT, cortisol and others play a key role in regulating the hair growth cycle. An imbalance of these hormones is one of the primary culprits behind female pattern hair loss and diffuse thinning, especially around menopause when estrogen levels decline.

Stress
High levels of the stress hormone cortisol can disrupt the normal hair cycle and growth phases, leading to excessive shedding. Chronic stress puts extra strain on the adrenal glands and contributes to hair loss.

Nutritional Deficiencies
Hair follicles are highly sensitive to nutritional shortfalls, particularly deficiencies in protein, iron, zinc, biotin, vitamin D and other key nutrients required for hair growth and overall health.

Other Inflammatory Conditions

Get Proper Testing
Blood work can identify vitamin/mineral deficiencies, thyroid issues, hormonal imbalances and other root causes behind your hair loss. Tests like CBC, iron panel, thyroid, vitamin D, zinc, and hormone tests like testosterone, DHT, estrogen, progesterone and others can provide valuable insights.

Reduce Stress
Finding ways to better manage stress is crucial, whether through meditation, exercise, adaptogenic herbs like ashwagandha or spiritual practices. Chronic stress amps up cortisol and inflammation which disrupts the hair cycle.

Enhance Nutrition
A diet rich in plant proteins, healthy fats, fruits, veggies and grains provides hair follicles with the nutrients required for growth. Supplementing with multivitamins, iron, zinc, biotin and antioxidants can also correct deficiencies.

My favorite nutrient-packed foods to enhance healthy hair are lentils, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, avocados, sweet potatoes, kidney beans and green tea.

Balance Hormones Naturally
For hormone-related hair loss, supplements like saw palmetto, spearmint tea, black cohosh, licorice root and others can help metabolize DHT and restore estrogen-androgen balance.

Boost Circulation
Improving circulation to the scalp through massage, hair brushing, hot/cold compresses or topical solutions like arginine or capsaicin creams can stimulate follicles and hair growth.

Be Gentle With Your Hair
Avoiding overly hot water, excessive styling, chemical treatments or heated tools can minimize breakage and fallout. A good sulfate-free shampoo is also recommended.

Natural Remedies for Hair Loss

Antioxidants – The antioxidants in green tea, nettles, and ginseng protect the scalp environment and promote hair strength/growth. Anti-oxidants are a good choice if you are prone to stress, allergies or infections or have inflammatory symptoms (joint pain, headaches, skin conditions).

Silica and Choline Complex
