Feel Lighter, Clearer, Stronger: How to Work With Your 40-Something Body

How I Lost 5 Pounds in less than a month at age 48—Without Dieting or Deprivation

You’re eating clean. You’re working out. You’ve even passed on the wine and cheese board more times than you can count. And yet—your jeans are tighter, the scale won’t budge, and your usual go-to wellness strategies seem broken.

Before you blame your willpower (again), take a deep breath and know this:
It’s not you—it’s your hormones.

If you’re in your 40s or early 50s, chances are your body is undergoing major internal shifts—quiet ones that completely change how your metabolism, energy, and weight regulation work.

Let me walk you through what’s happening—and what you can do about it.

I Get It—Because I Lived It

A few weeks ago, I was getting ready for a dance performance where my partner, Joe, was going to lift me three times on stage.

To say I wanted to feel light, strong, and agile would be an understatement. However, early Spring was filled with many celebrations – birthdays, anniversary, vacation, and visitors – and I was left feeling anything but light!

I decided to make a few strategic shifts in how I was eating—not drastic, not restrictive, just aligned with what I know works for a body in perimenopause.

Here’s what I did that helped me lose 5 pounds in less than a month—without counting calories, over-exercising (I actually exercised less because of a busier work schedule), or cutting joy from my life:

  • I avoided the things I usually only aim to limit—alcohol, bread, pasta, crackers, tortilla chips

  • I started my day with a fruit smoothie with 20 grams of plant based protein powder or silken tofu blended in
  • Lunch became my largest meal—with 30–35 grams of protein, complex carbs (quinoa, farro, brown rice or red lentil pasta), and healthy fats (avocado, olive oil, tahini, walnuts), plus a square of dark chocolate

  • Instead of snacking at 4:30–5pm (this is where hummus and tortilla chips usually come in to play), I had dinner ready to eat by 6pm—usually a hearty soup with vegetables and lentils or beans (split pea soup, black bean soup vegetarian chili)

  • I kept my eating window between 8am and 6pm everyday, consistently allowing my body a solid break overnight. I usually only stick to this habit Mondays – Thursdays but found continuing it through the weekends to be really helpful.

Beyond releasing 5 pounds, I was able to see the beneficial shifts of increasing muscle mass and decreasing my fat percentage – those two numbers are more important to me for long term health than weight. These small but intentional changes worked with my body’s shifting biology—not against it. Here’s why that’s key in your 40s and beyond.

What’s Actually Changing in Your 40s?

As you move through perimenopause, your hormone levels—especially estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone—start to shift in unpredictable ways.

These hormones don’t just impact your cycle. They influence:

  • How you store and burn fat

  • Your muscle mass

  • Insulin sensitivity (a key driver of midsection weight gain)

  • Your stress response, sleep quality, and cravings

Translation? What worked in your 30s (or even just last year) might not work anymore.

Is Insulin Resistance the Sneaky Culprit?

Insulin is your blood sugar regulator. But as estrogen drops, so does your insulin sensitivity. This means:

  • You’re more prone to blood sugar spikes

  • Your body may store more fat—especially around the belly

  • You may feel hangry, tired, and foggy after meals or between them

Even if you’re eating “healthy,” your meals may not be stabilizing your blood sugar, which leads to:

  • Energy crashes

  • Intense cravings

  • Unwanted fat storage

Why Dieting Harder Isn’t Helping

Here’s the kicker: conventional advice like “eat less, move more” becomes counterproductive in midlife.

Restricting calories too aggressively or relying on long cardio sessions can:

  • Elevate cortisol, your stress hormone

  • Cause muscle loss, slowing your metabolism

  • Increase fat retention, especially in the midsection

  • Leave you exhausted, moody, and stuck

This is where women often feel betrayed by their bodies. But the truth is: your body is protecting you the best way it knows how. It just needs a new strategy.

What to Do Instead (Your Midlife Wellness Blueprint)

Here’s what works better—especially for women in perimenopause or menopause:

🥣 Balance Your Blood Sugar

  • Combine protein + fat + fiber at every meal

  • Ditch the ultra-processed snacks and opt for real, whole foods

  • Avoid long stretches of fasting that leave you ravenous (unless it works for your rhythm)

🏋️‍♀️ Strength Train at Least 2x/Week

  • Prioritize resistance training to build lean muscle

  • More muscle = higher metabolism, better blood sugar control, and stronger bones

🍽 Front-load Your Meals

  • Make lunch your biggest meal when your metabolism is most active – this is a good time of day for complex carbs and raw vegetables.

  • Keep dinner light and earlier in the evening to support digestion and sleep. Instead of a salad, have well cooked vegetables in soups and stews along with protein.

⏰ Create a Consistent Eating Window

  • Try a gentle version of time-restricted eating (like 8am–6pm, just like I did)

  • Give your body a chance to rest, digest, and reset overnight

😴 Honor Your Sleep

  • Hormonal balance starts with sleep

  • Aim for 7–8 hours, create a wind-down routine, and keep caffeine earlier in the day

Listen to What Your Body’s Asking For

Your body isn’t working against you. It’s just evolving. And when you give it the tools it needs in this new season, the results can be surprisingly beautiful—just like they were for me before stepping on that dance floor.

This isn’t about “fixing” yourself. It’s about recalibrating to a rhythm that actually supports who you are today—not who you were 10 years ago.

You’re Not Broken—You’re Rewired

Midlife isn’t a decline. It’s a reset. A chance to shed what no longer works and embrace a stronger, wiser, more energized version of yourself.

If you’ve been struggling to lose weight, feel energized, or find a routine that works… know that you’re not alone—and you’re not stuck. There’s a way forward that’s not about more restriction or punishment. It’s about working with your body, not against it.

You’ve got this.
And you don’t have to go it alone.
