Menopause, Inflammation, and Pain: How to Break the Cycle and Feel Strong Again

Why does everything hurt all of a sudden?

Your knees creak when you stand up. Your hips feel stiff before you even get out of bed. Your shoulders? Locked up like an old door that hasn’t been opened in years.

But here’s the thing: It’s not just aging.

And no, you’re not “falling apart.”

So what’s really going on? And more importantly—how do you stop feeling like a tin man in need of oiling every time you move?

Let’s break it down.

The Connection Between Menopause and Chronic Inflammation

Inflammation is like a slow-burning fire inside your body that needs constant management. You don’t always notice it at first, but if it’s not kept in check, over time it starts damaging the joints, muscles, and tendons you rely on every day.

And here’s where menopause comes in: Estrogen plays a key role in keeping inflammation in check.

When estrogen levels drop, inflammation ramps up. That’s why your once-smooth joints now feel stiff. Your muscles ache for no reason. Injuries take forever to heal.

I wish I had paid more attention to this connection in myself sooner.

Around Thanksgiving 2024, I woke up with a deep, aching pain in my back after spending a few nights away from my own bed. I brushed it off, thinking it was just my scoliosis acting up. But by mid-December, that back pain had shifted into a nagging hip pain on the left side that made every step feel off. Without even realizing it, I started walking differently to compensate.

By New Year’s Day, my left foot was on fire. A sharp, stabbing pain shot through my heel with every step. Plantar fasciitis. Just like that, one small imbalance had set off a chain reaction, leaving me limping into the new year. I was 47 and feeling like I was 97. Being an avid walker, yogi and dancer for both my physical and mental health – I had to disrupt this pain this cycle ASAP to enjoy my life again!

Why It Feels Like Everything Hurts

This isn’t just about “getting older.” It’s about:

Loss of collagen – Your tendons and ligaments become less flexible, leading to pain and stiffness.
Increased joint inflammation – Without estrogen regulating inflammation, your joints swell and ache.
Muscle loss (sarcopenia) – We naturally lose muscle with age, which makes movement feel harder and more tiring.
Poor recovery – Tiny injuries that used to heal in days now take weeks (or months).

It’s like the warranty on your body suddenly expired, and everything started breaking down at the same time.

But here’s the good news: You don’t have to live with this.

Fighting Inflammation From the Inside Out

Let’s start with my favorite foundation: Food.

What you eat can either fuel inflammation or fight it.

Foods that help:

Omega-3 fats – Wild Salmon, walnuts, and flaxseeds help reduce joint pain.
Antioxidants – Berries, leafy greens, turmeric, ginger and rosemary combat inflammation at the cellular level.
Collagen-supporting foods – Red bell pepper, kiwi, hibiscus tea, plant based collagen peptides and citrus fruits help keep your tendons and ligaments strong.

Foods that make it worse:

Refined sugar – Triggers inflammatory pathways that lead to more pain.
Processed vegetable oils – (Soybean, corn, canola) throw off the body’s natural anti-inflammatory balance.
Excess alcohol – Weakens muscle recovery and contributes to joint swelling.

I’m not saying you need to eat perfectly (because let’s be real—sometimes you need the cookie), but small changes add up.

The Right Way to Move When Everything Feels Stiff

When you’re in pain, the last thing you want to do is move. But avoiding movement only makes it worse.

The trick? The right kind of movement.

🛑 NOT high-impact workouts that leave you feeling wrecked the next day. I’m talking about you – CrossFit and HIIT.
YES to strength training, mobility work, and walking.

Best exercises for menopausal joint pain:

🏋️‍♀️ Strength training – Builds muscle to support your joints. Start light and increase gradually.
🧘‍♀️ Mobility drills – Think slow, controlled movements like hip circles, spinal twists, and shoulder rolls – Yin Yoga
🚶‍♀️ Walking – Keeps joints lubricated without excessive strain.

Stress, Sleep, and the Pain Cycle

Here’s something most people don’t realize: Stress makes joint pain worse.

When you’re stressed, your body releases cortisol, a hormone that leads to inflammation. And if you’re not sleeping well? That’s even more inflammation.

🔹 Cortisol spikes = more joint pain.
🔹 Poor sleep = increased inflammation.

Simple ways to break the cycle:
🌿 Magnesium at night (calms the nervous system)
🌙 A bedtime wind-down routine (dim lights, no screens, deep breathing)
🛏 Prioritizing sleep like it’s a meeting you can’t cancel

Small Daily Habits That Make a Big Difference

If you want to feel strong again, it’s not about doing everything at once. It’s about small, doable changes that add up.

Start here:

✅ Add one anti-inflammatory food to each meal.
✅ Swap one high-impact workout for gentle strength or mobility work 1-2 times a week.
✅ Pick one stress-reducing habit to practice daily.

I never would have guessed that a few nights in the wrong bed would lead to months of pain. But once I connected the dots—how my back pain threw off my hips, which changed my gait, which led to plantar fasciitis—I realized I needed to support my body from the ground up. So I made a few small but intentional changes: a cushy anti-fatigue mat in the kitchen for where I do my food prep, arch-supportive slippers for around the house, and the right sneakers for walking. I committed to daily calf stretches, even when I didn’t feel like it. And now? I’m walking—and even dancing in high heels—without pain. It wasn’t an overnight fix, but little by little, I rebuilt my foundation. If you’re feeling stuck in a cycle of pain, just know that relief is possible. It starts with one small change at a time.
